This article explores the current panorama of slavery in the world. It argues that extreme poverty in increasing in the world because of a systematic exploitation of the poor. The sectors responsible for contemporary enslavement are not states, but rather powerful individuals and greedy corporations. Paradoxically, the European and North American governments seem not to be willing to fully commit to the eradication of poverty, and allow the perpetuation of an economically oppressive system.
