The two texts in this learning object were originally written for children's school reading books in Afghanistan. In a country where attendance at school has always been at relatively low levels, the purpose of a reading text was often didactic--i.e. to convince children and their parents that attending school is worthwhile. The two texts offer interesting insights into what the value of being educated is judged to be in such societies.
